Documents Required for GST Registration in India (2026 Checklist)

GST registration needs seven core documents: your PAN, Aadhaar of the applicant, proof of business address, bank account proof, photographs, and — for companies and LLPs — a board resolution or authorisation letter plus a digital signature. That's the full list for most businesses. The type of business you run (proprietorship, partnership, or company) decides whose documents go in and whether you need a DSC.

Here's the honest part: most rejections aren't about missing documents. They're about small mismatches — a name spelled differently on the PAN and Aadhaar, a blurry rent agreement, an electricity bill older than two months. This checklist covers exactly what the GST portal asks for, what's commonly rejected, and how to get it right the first time.

Documents by Business Type

Sole proprietorship

  • Proprietor's PAN and Aadhaar
  • Business address proof (rent agreement + NOC, or ownership proof)
  • Bank proof (cancelled cheque or statement in the business or proprietor's name)
  • Photograph of the proprietor
  • No DSC needed — Aadhaar OTP verification works

Partnership firm / LLP

  • Firm's PAN and partnership deed (LLP: Certificate of Incorporation + LLP agreement)
  • Aadhaar and photos of all partners / designated partners
  • Business address proof
  • Bank proof in the firm's name
  • Authorisation letter naming the authorised signatory
  • LLPs must use DSC; partnership firms can use Aadhaar OTP

Private limited company

  • Company PAN and Certificate of Incorporation
  • MOA and AOA
  • Aadhaar and photos of all directors
  • Board resolution authorising the signatory
  • Registered office address proof
  • Bank proof in the company's name
  • DSC of the authorised signatory is mandatory

What's Commonly Rejected (and Why)

We see the same five rejections again and again:

  1. Name mismatch. "Rahul Sharma" on the PAN but "Rahul Kumar Sharma" on the Aadhaar. The portal cross-checks with the Income Tax database — even a middle-name difference triggers a query. Fix it before applying.
  2. Blurry or cropped scans. Phone photos taken in bad light, edges cut off. Scan at a reasonable resolution; every corner of the document should be visible.
  3. Stale address proof. Electricity bills and bank statements must generally be recent (within a couple of months). A six-month-old bill gets questioned.
  4. Rent agreement without NOC. If the premises are rented, the agreement alone isn't enough — you need the landlord's No Objection Certificate for the business to operate (and register for GST) from that address.
  5. Bank proof in the wrong name. The account holder name must match the business or applicant name. A personal account in a different name raises flags.

How Long Does Document Preparation Take?

If you have everything in a drawer already, under an hour. In practice, most founders spend 2–3 days chasing one missing item — usually the landlord NOC or a bank statement in the right name. The single biggest time-saver: check the name match across PAN, Aadhaar, and bank proof before you start the application. Fixing a mismatch after the officer raises a query adds a week.

If your rent agreement is old or informal (a common situation for home offices), get a fresh NOC from the landlord on letterhead with their signature — it takes one conversation and prevents the most common address-proof objection.

Tips to Get Approved the First Time

  • Use Aadhaar OTP verification where allowed — it's the fastest route and avoids DSC hassles for proprietorships.
  • Match every name exactly as it appears on the PAN. Copy-paste from the PAN card if you have to.
  • Keep files under the size limits (1 MB for most documents, 100 KB for photos). Compress before uploading.
  • Double-check the HSN/SAC codes for your goods or services — wrong codes are a common reason for officer queries.

The GST portal (gst.gov.in) doesn't charge any government fee for registration — if anyone asks you to pay the "government" for the application itself, that's a red flag. Professional help, of course, is a separate matter.
