Understanding this document

What is website privacy policy?

Under the DPDP Act, 2023, anyone collecting personal data must publish a clear privacy notice: what you collect, why, how long you keep it, and how users can reach your grievance officer. This is no longer good practice — it is law, with penalties that scale.

When do you need it?

Before you collect a single email address or phone number. Update it the day you add a new data practice — a new newsletter, analytics tool, or payment flow.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • No named grievance officer with contact details — the Act specifically requires one.
  • Vague "we may use data to improve services" language that explains nothing.
  • Collecting data first and writing the policy later — consent must be informed and specific.
  • No data retention or deletion timelines mentioned at all.

Need it tailored to your company?

Templates cover the standard cases. If your situation has complications — multiple parties, unusual terms, regulatory scrutiny — get it drafted properly. Our CAs, CSs and lawyers do this every day.
