What ICEGATE registration actually is
ICEGATE is Indian Customs\u2019 online gateway. Every import into India and every export out of it is documented here — Bills of Entry for imports, Shipping Bills for exports.
Think of it as a FASTag for international trade. The highway is global commerce. Without the tag, your goods sit at the toll plaza. That plaza is the port, and the waiting costs you money every single day.
Registration is mandatory for every importer and exporter. No ICEGATE ID means no customs clearance. There is no workaround, no agent who can \u201cmanage\u201d it for you without the registration existing.
Your AD Code — the Authorised Dealer Code your bank issues — is also registered on ICEGATE. This is what connects your export shipments to export benefits like duty drawback and RoDTEP.

They confuse IEC with ICEGATE
IEC (from DGFT) is your licence to trade internationally. ICEGATE (from Customs) is where you actually file the paperwork. You need both. One without the other is a car without fuel.

Yes. Every Bill of Entry (imports) and Shipping Bill (exports) in India is filed electronically on ICEGATE. Without a registered ICEGATE ID, customs will not clear your goods. There is no manual alternative anymore.
IEC is your DGFT licence that says you are allowed to import and export. ICEGATE registration is your Customs login where you actually file the documents for each shipment. Think of IEC as the driving licence and ICEGATE as the car. You need both to move.
AD Code (Authorised Dealer Code) is a 14-digit code your bank allots for foreign exchange transactions. On ICEGATE, it links your export shipments to your bank account — which is how export benefits like duty drawback and RoDTEP reach you. No AD Code on ICEGATE, no benefits.
With clean documents, typically 5 to 7 working days. The delays almost always come from mismatched names across IEC, PAN and bank records, or a slow AD Code allotment from the bank. We front-load the verification so the clock does not reset.
You can. The portal is public. But the form asks for details in a specific format, the document uploads have size and type rules, and a single mismatch sends you back to the start. Most businesses come to us after two failed attempts. We would rather you come before the first.
