Overview

What a factory license is

A factory license is the permission granted under the Factories Act, 1948 (and state rules) to operate manufacturing premises.
It generally applies where 10 or more workers are employed with the aid of power, or 20 or more without the aid of power.
The license is issued by the Chief Inspector of Factories of your state, and it must be in place before manufacturing begins.
Licenses are typically valid for a set period and must be renewed - operating on an expired license is treated the same as having none.

Benefits

Why manufacturers get licensed through us

Open each benefit to see what it means for you.

State rules handled

Factory licensing is state-administered. Forms, fees, and inspection practices differ across states - we work with your state's specific requirements, not a generic template.

Plans drawn up correctly

The application needs approved building plans showing layout, machinery placement, and safety provisions. We make sure what you submit matches what the inspector expects to see.

Inspection prepared

The inspector's visit decides the outcome. We brief you on what gets checked - safety, ventilation, exits, welfare facilities - before they arrive.

Renewals tracked

We keep your license validity on our calendar and start the renewal process in time, so production never has to pause.

Documents

Documents you will usually need

Clear, current documents matter more than a long checklist. Names, dates of birth and addresses should match across records.

If a founder or investor is outside India

Foreign ownership is possible in many sectors, but it adds document authentication, banking and FEMA work. Set the route before funds move.

Plan before you start

  • Check whether your sector permits automatic-route foreign investment
  • Confirm the Indian resident director arrangement
  • Map ownership, beneficial ownership and pricing
  • Allow time for apostilled or consularised documents

Plan for after setup

  • Receive funds through permitted banking channels
  • Complete RBI/FEMA reporting and keep the bank evidence
  • Coordinate tax and ongoing compliance advice early

Yes. The license must be obtained before manufacturing begins. Starting production without one can lead to penalties and closure orders.
Generally no, unless your state has lowered the threshold. The standard test is 10+ workers with power or 20+ without. We confirm your state's position before you spend anything.
It varies by state - typically a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on inspection scheduling. We give you your state's realistic range upfront.
Fees are set by each state and usually depend on the number of workers and installed power. We compute the exact fee from your state's schedule before filing.
Validity periods differ by state - commonly one to five years. We track your expiry and handle the renewal.
The inspector verifies the premises against your approved plans - safety measures, ventilation, lighting, exits, toilets, and first-aid provisions. We brief you on the checklist beforehand.
A change of occupier or ownership needs to be notified and the license amended. We handle the transfer formalities.
Probably not - the Factories Act covers manufacturing processes. But if you do packing, assembly, or processing at the warehouse, talk to us before assuming you are exempt.
